ABA for “High-Functioning” Autism (ASD Level 1)
At Therapist to you, we help children who need lighter supports - often called “high-functioning autism,” formally ASD Level 1. Many of these kids have strong language and learning skills, but need coaching with flexibility, social problem-solving, self-advocacy, and executive functioning (planning, organization, transitions). This page explains how Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can be tailored -kind, collaborative, and practical—to support your child at home, in school, and in the community.
ABA with us is relationship-centered, trauma-informed, and goal-driven - never “one-size-fits-all.”
Some children don’t need intensive support but still bump into everyday hurdles—flexibility with changes, group work at school, starting tasks, or asking for help. This page explains how Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can be tailored for kids with ASD Level 1 in a way that’s respectful, practical, and family-friendly.
We keep therapy kind and collaborative. Skills first. Real life, not drills.
What we tend to work on
- Social communication: reading the room, taking turns in conversation, joining groups
- Flexibility: handling “plan B,” tolerating mistakes, easing perfectionism
- Executive skills: planning, organizing, starting and finishing steps, time awareness
- Self-advocacy: asking for help, clarifying directions, using supports
- Daily independence: homework routines, hygiene/ADLs, packing a backpack, community outings
- School carryover: aligning with IEP/504 so progress shows up in class
How sessions feel
- Assessment with your child’s voice: we listen first—what’s easy, what’s hard, what matters to your family.
- Natural routines: practice during homework time, mornings, club meetings, errands.
- Simple tools: checklists, timers, visual plans, self-rating scales, “plan B” cards.
- Parent & teacher coaching: a few do-able strategies each week so everyone pulls in the same direction.
- Clear progress: short updates in plain language—what changed and what’s next.
Examples of goals (you choose the priorities)
- Start homework within 5 minutes using a 3-step checklist, 4/5 days
- Use a 2-step coping plan (breathe + plan B) within 2 minutes of a change
- Join a small-group conversation with 1–2 on-topic comments
- Pack backpack with a visual list at 90% independence
- Ask for help with a clear question twice daily in class
Where therapy happens
- In-home- Morning and evening routines, homework planning, screen-time transitions, sibling problem-solving—with coaching built in so changes stick between sessions.
- In-center (Melbourne & West Palm Beach)- Structured space for focused practice: organization stations, role-plays for social problem-solving, and peer practice when available.
- In-school- With your permission, we coordinate with teachers to support IEP/504 goals—cueing systems, visual supports, calm-down plans, and self-advocacy scripts used right in the classroom. - Many families blend settings. Start where stress is lowest; add another setting when it helps skills carry over.

Parent questions (quick answers)
- Is ABA right for ASD Level 1?
Yes—when it’s individualized. We target flexible thinking, executive skills, and social problem-solving, not just “compliance.”
- Will this feel like rote drills?
No. We use conversations, role-plays, and real tasks. If a strategy doesn’t feel respectful or useful, we change it.
- How do you involve school?
With written permission, we align with teachers and IEP/504 goals so your child uses the same supports in class.
- How fast will we see change?
Many families notice small wins within weeks (smoother transitions, fewer arguments), with larger gains as routines settle.
You know your child best. We’ll listen, plan together, and practice skills that make home, school, and community life easier. When you’re ready, we’re here.
